Völklingen ist eine an der Saar gelegene Mittelstadt mit ca. 40.000 Einwohnern. Sie ist nach Saarbrücken die zweitgrößte Stadt im Regionalverband Saarbrücken und gemessen an der Einwohnerzahl die viertgrößte Stadt des Saarlandes.
Die Stadt war und ist stark durch die Montanindustrie geprägt. Sie ist Sitz der Saarstahl AG. Weithin bekannt ist Völklingen durch das Weltkulturerbe Völklinger Hütte. Die Völklinger Hütte ist weltweit das einzige Eisenwerk aus der Blütezeit der Industrialisierung, das vollständig erhalten ist. Seit 1994 zählt es zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe.
