Der Ahrwein wird im Weinanbaugebiet Ahr nach § 3 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 Weingesetz angebaut, das seinen Namen von dem gleichnamigen Fluss hat. Es ist in Deutschland das größte geschlossene Weinanbaugebiet für Rotwein. Auf insgesamt 548 ha Rebfläche werden 87,5 % Rotwein- und 12,5 % Weißweinreben angebaut. Der Anteil trockener Weine erreichte im Jahr 2005 einen Anteil von 50,9 %, während der Anteil halbtrockener Weine bei 30,9 % lag.
Der Tafelwein der Ahr wird nach § 1 Weinverordnung unter dem Namen Rhein-Mosel vermarktet und Landwein nach § 2 WeinVO als Ahrtaler Landwein.
