Anfang des 17.Jahrhunderts fand ein Schafhirte hier eine kleine Wasserquelle unter einem Rosenstrauch. In diesem Wasser wusch er seinen ernsthaft kranken Fuß, der daraufhin gesund wurde. In dem ungewöhnlichen Rosenstrauch mitten in der damaligen Heidelandschaft erkannte man ein Zeichen für Maria. So setzte hier die Marienverehrung ein. Eine Kapelle wurde gebaut und auch eine Einsiedelei, in der viele Jahre ein Franziskaner lebte. Im Laufe der Zeit folgten weitere Heilungen.
