Die Hervester Zechensiedlung wurde 1912 zwischen der heutigen Halterner Straße und der Lippe angelegt: An der Ostseite entstand der katholische Bereich mit Josefschule und Josefkirche, an der Westseite der evangelische Bezirk mit Augustaschule und heutiger Kreuzkirche.
Heute sind die Zechen dicht, die Arbeit liegt nicht mehr vor der Haustür. „Die neue Nutzung der Zechenfläche und die Schaffung zukunftsfähiger Arbeitsplätze sind eine große Herausforderung", gesteht Lütkenhorst, dass der Strukturwandel noch nicht wie gewünscht gegriffen habe. Dennoch dürfe man den Ortsteil Hervest nicht schlecht reden: Durch Sanierung und Modernisierung habe die Siedlung einen ganz eigenen Charme entwickelt.
