Der Ortenaukreis ist der flächengrößte Landkreis in Baden-Württemberg. Er gehört zur Region Südlicher Oberrhein im Regierungsbezirk Freiburg. Kreisstadt und zugleich bevölkerungsreichste Stadt des Ortenaukreises ist Offenburg.
Der Ortenaukreis hat Anteil an der Oberrheinischen Tiefebene, am Mittleren Schwarzwald und am Nordschwarzwald, dessen höchste Erhebung, die Hornisgrinde, im nordöstlichen Kreisgebiet liegt. Den Ortenaukreis durchschneiden viele Täler, darunter die Flusstäler der Schutter, Kinzig, Rench und Acher, alle vier rechte Nebenflüsse des Rheins, wobei die Kinzig der bedeutendste Schwarzwald-Fluss des Kreises ist.
