Die Stadt Gronau liegt im westlichen Münsterland im Nordwesten von Nordrhein-Westfalen. Sie ist eine mittlere kreisangehörige Stadt und nach Bocholt die zweitgrößte des Kreises Borken im Regierungsbezirk Münster.
Gronau liegt in der Dinkel-Niederung. Die Dinkel fließt von Süd nach Nord durch das Stadtgebiet. Nordöstlich von Gronau liegt das Gildehauser Venn, ein Moor- und Heidegebiet. Das Kerngebiet des Gildehauser Venns ist heute Naturschutzgebiet. Der Südteil des Gildehauser Venns wird Rüenberger Venn genannt.
