Ratheim ist mit etwa 9260 Einwohnern der zweitgrößte Ortsteil der Stadt Hückelhoven . Die Ortschaft liegt im Kreis Heinsberg, dem westlichsten Landkreis von Nordrhein-Westfalen, und ist etwa 10 km von der deutsch-niederländischen Grenze entfernt.
Ursprünglich geprägt durch Landwirtschaft und die traditionellen Handwerke des Rurtals wie Schuhmacherei, Korbflechterei und Klompenmacherei, im 19. Jahrhundert auch Heimweberei, wurde die Entwicklung des Ortes im 20. Jahrhundert wesentlich von der Schuhindustrie und dem Steinkohlenbergbau beeinflusst.
