Im sogenannten Engländerunglück geriet am 17. April 1936 eine Gruppe von 27 englischen Schülern am Schauinsland in Bergnot, nachdem sie trotz ungünstiger Wettervorhersage unter Leitung ihres Lehrers von Freiburg im Breisgau aus auf den Berg gewandert war. Auf dem Kamm verlor die Gruppe in einem Meter Neuschnee, Nebel und Schneesturm die Orientierung. Durch beherztes Handeln der Hofsgrunder Bevölkerung konnten die meisten der Schüler gerettet werden, fünf starben an Erschöpfung.
Das Verhalten der Gruppe wurde anschließend von der nationalsozialistischen Propaganda zur Heldentat umgedeutet und mit bedeutender Wirkung außenpolitisch gefeiert.
