Das Kreisgebiet Nordfrieslands bildet den nördlich der Eidermündung gelegenen Bereich an der Nordseeküste Schleswig-Holsteins (auch Westküste genannt). Es umfasst dabei sowohl den Bereich des sogenannten Festlands an der schleswig-holsteinischen Westküste[5], wie auch die zersplitterten Nordfriesischen Inseln und Halligen im Bereich der historischen Uthlande des Nordfriesischen Wattenmeers. Dieser Raum ist, vor allem im Bereich des historischen Strandes sowie des Heverstroms, seit dem Mittelalter durch verheerende Sturmfluten (z. B. Zweite Marcellusflut und Burchardiflut) und mehrfacher, gezielter Landgewinnung vielfach umgestaltet worden.
