Østre Gulstav ist ein ganz besonderer Verkaufswald, den man auch an anderen Orten auf Langeland finden kann. Die Wälder werden als Gärselwälder oder Stämmungswälder bezeichnet, da der gesamte Wald über einen Zeitraum von 20 Jahren gestämt wird, wonach die Bäume neue Triebe aus dem Stock treiben. Diese Art von Wald bietet gute Lebensbedingungen für unter anderem die Anemone. In den Frühjahrsmonaten kann man ein Meer von Anemonen im hellen Waldboden erleben. In der nahegelegenen Gulstav Mose wächst eine ansehnliche Bestände der wilden Orchidee Maiglockenblume. Diese blüht im schönen lila Farbton im Mai, wenn der Kuckuck ruft.
