Um Vordingborg und Schiffe vor feindlichen Angriffen von See zu schützen, wurde bereits in der Mitte des 11. Jahrhunderts eine massive Segelsperre mit etwa 400 eingerammten, spitz zulaufenden Pfählen quer über die Bucht angelegt, und nur Einheimische kannten die Fahrtroute durch die Sperre.
