Nach der Eroberung durch die Mauren wurde Tortosa 1148 von einem Teilheer des Zweiten Kreuzzugs für den Grafen Raimund Berengar IV. von Barcelona zurückgewonnen. In den Jahren 1413/14 fand hier die Disputation von Tortosa statt, eines der erzwungenen Religionsgespräche zwischen Christen und Juden im Mittelalter.
