Pamplona liegt in einer kleinen Hochebene auf 449 msnm am Fluss Arga. Die Umgebung der Stadt ist bergig, der höchste Berg der Umgebung ist der Peña Izaga, ein Pyrenäen-Ausläufer mit 1353 Meter Höhe. Das Stadtbild wird von einer großen und gut erhaltenen Zitadelle und einer großen Kathedrale geprägt. Zentrum ist die Plaza del Castillo mit ihrem Ausläufer zu den alten Burgos vor dem Rathaus an der Plaza Consistorial.
