Tordesillas ist in der Geschichte und Kartographie berühmt für den Vertrag von Tordesillas (7. Juni 1494). Er stellte eine Abgrenzung zwischen Spanien und Portugal in der neu entdeckten Welt dar. Die Abgrenzungslinie wurde entlang eines Meridians 370 Seemeilen westlich der Kapverdischen Inseln gezogen. Die Linie lag genau zwischen den Kapverdischen Inseln (bereits portugiesisch) und den von Christoph Kolumbus auf seiner ersten Reise entdeckten Inseln.
