März 1493 kehrte die Pinta, eines der Schiffe von Kolumbus' Reise in die Neue Welt, nach Europa zurück und kam in Baiona an, wodurch der Hafen der Stadt der erste war, der Neuigkeiten über die Entdeckung Amerikas erhielt. Eine Nachbildung des Schiffes kann besichtigt werden, und das Ereignis wird jedes Jahr gefeiert.
