Op 1 maart 1493 keerde de Pinta, een van de schepen van Columbus' reis naar de Nieuwe Wereld, terug naar Europa en arriveerde in Baiona, waardoor de haven van de stad de eerste was die nieuws ontving over de ontdekking van Amerika. Er kan een replica van het schip worden bezocht en de gebeurtenis wordt elk jaar gevierd.
