Im sechzehnten Jahrhundert beschlossen die Behörden, den Zustand des Stadtzugangs aufgrund des schlechten Zustands des bestehenden Tores zu verbessern. Mit diesem Ziel vor Augen erließ Bürgermeister Alonso Gonzalez de Arteaga am 18. Februar 1572 den Auftrag zum Bau des Brückentores.
Die angegebenen Gründe konzentrierten sich auf die Tatsache, dass es eines der Haupttore der Stadt war, das ein hohes Verkehrsaufkommen sowohl von Personen als auch von Gütern bewältigte. Neben der Vergrößerung des Torwegs wünschten sich die Stadtbeamten eine Verbesserung der künstlerischen Merkmale des Tores im Rahmen einer städtischen Erneuerung.
