Die Spanische Nationalbibliothek in Madrid ist die wichtigste Bibliothek Spaniens und der zentrale Fundus für Bücher aus Spanien. Der Bestand der 1712 gegründeten Bibliothek umfasst zirka 26 Millionen Medieneinheiten, womit sie eine der größten Bibliotheken der Erde ist. Die Nationalbibliothek hat eine Nebenstelle in Alcalá de Henares. 2012 feierte sie ihr 300-jähriges Jubiläum.
Die spanische Nationalbibliothek wurde 1712 von Philipp V. als Biblioteca Real gegründet, obwohl der eigentliche Gründungserlass erst am 2. Januar 1716 verkündet wurde. Die Bibliothek sollte sowohl den Bürgern Zugang zu Wissen eröffnen, als auch die Privatbibliotheken einiger Adliger aufnehmen. Die Drucker waren verpflichtet ein Exemplar aller in Spanien veröffentlichten Bücher abzugeben . Die erste Veröffentlichung der Bibliothek erschien 1738 mit dem Titel Bibliotheca Universal de la Polygraphia Española, ihr Herausgeber war Cristóbal Rodríguez.
