Die Plaza del Canal de Ponce liegt zwischen der Porta de La Caleta und der Baluarte de los Mártires.
Francisco Ponce Cordones ist der Entdecker durch seine historische Forschung des Kanals Bahía-La Caleta , der in phönizischer Zeit den heutigen Stadtkern von Cádiz in zwei Inseln teilte.
Die Phönizier gründeten Gadir (Jahr 1104 v. Chr.) auf den damaligen zwei Inseln Erytheia und Kotinoussa , getrennt durch einen Kanal, der den Atlantischen Ozean mit der Bucht verband. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde das Flussbett verängstigt, bis es aufgrund der Sedimente des Guadalete-Flusses und menschlicher Eingriffe verschwand und das heutige Erscheinungsbild der Stadt bildete. In La Caleta können Sie bei Ebbe das Riff auf dem Meeresboden sehen, das durch einen sandigen Kanal getrennt ist , der den Atlantik mit der Bucht verband.
