Diese Replik im Maßstab 1:50 (ca. 2 Meter hoch) war ein Geschenk der Stadt Brüssel an die Stadtgemeinschaft von Sevilla anlässlich der Weltausstellung, die 1992 in der andalusischen Stadt stattfand .
Das Denkmal wurde nach dem Ereignis nicht entfernt und schmückt noch immer den Busbahnhof an der Plaza de Armas.
Das ursprüngliche Atomium wurde für die Brüsseler Weltausstellung 1958 entworfen und gebaut und ist eine Kreuzung zwischen Skulptur und Architektur. Das Denkmal, das einen 165 Milliarden Mal vergrößerten Eisenkristall (mit 9 Atomen) darstellt, ist mit seiner einzigartigen Silhouette im Laufe der Zeit zum Symbol Brüssels und Belgiens geworden.
