Das reiche Klosterleben der Mönche von Cluny war vielen Mönchen, die die strengen Regeln des Benedikt von Nursia einhalten wollten, ein Dorn im Auge. Einer von ihnen war Robert von Molesme, der einen neuen Orden gründete: den Orden der Zisterzienser. Er gründete seinen Orden in Cîteaux, was im Lateinischen Cistercium ist. Daher werden die Klosterbrüder Zisterzienser genannt.
