The rich monastic life of the monks of Cluny was an eyesore to many monks who wanted to adhere to the strict rules of Benedict. One of them was Robert of Molesme, who founded a new order: the order of the Cistercians. He established his order in Cîteaux, which in Latin is Cistercium. Hence, the monks are called Cistercians.
