La rica vida monástica de los monjes de Cluny fue una espina en el costado de muchos monjes que deseaban seguir las estrictas reglas de Benito. Uno de ellos fue Roberto de Molesme, quien fundó una nueva orden: la orden de los cistercienses. Estableció su orden en Cîteaux, que en latín es Cistercium. De ahí que los monjes sean llamados cistercienses.
