Das Turnier und die Tennisanlage ist nach dem Luftfahrtpionier Roland Garros benannt.Die French Open sind das einzige Sandplatzturnier der Grand-Slam-Serie und stellen eine besondere Herausforderung für die Spieler dar, da das Spiel auf Roter Asche wesentlich langsamer als beispielsweise auf Hartplatzbelägen ist. Dies hat zur Folge, dass die Matches im Durchschnitt länger dauern als Spiele bei anderen Grand-Slam-Turnieren.
