Mit einer Fläche von 105ha (darunter ein 17ha großer See) wurde dieser Park im Jahre 1856 von den Brüdern Denis und Eugène Buhler, zweier Landschaftsarchitekten aus Paris, geschaffen und ab 1857 eröffnet. Es ist der größte Stadtpark Frankreichs.
