Der Cesse-Aquädukt ist einer von mehreren Aquädukten, oder Wasserbrücken, die für den Kanal du Midi geschaffen wurden. Ursprünglich kreuzte der Kanal die Cesse auf der Ebene. Pierre-Paul Riquet, der ursprüngliche Architekt des Kanals, hatte einen gebogenen Damm mit einer Länge von 205 Metern und einer Höhe von 9,10 Metern über die Cesse gebaut, um Wasser zu sammeln und die Überquerung möglich zu machen; der Aquädukt ersetzte diesen Damm.
