Eine ruhmreiche Steigung, zwar befleckt durch Doping, ist die von Hautacam im Jahr 2000. Es war bei diesem Anstieg nach Hautacam, dass Lance Armstrong seinen Sieg in der Tour de France 2000 einfuhr (später wird er aufgrund von Doping disqualifiziert). Unter erbärmlichen Wetterbedingungen erreichten die Fahrer die erste Bergetappe, mit Javier Otxoa als einzigem Überlebenden eines frühzeitigen Bruchs. Bei der Schlusssteigung setzte Armstrong allein im Wind und Regen fort. Er ließ Jan Ullrich auf dem zweiten Platz vier Minuten hinter sich. Das Gelbe Trikot von Armstrong sollte später in der Tour de France nie mehr bedroht werden. Doch im Rahmen des Dopingskandals steht diese Leistung natürlich in einem völlig anderen Licht.
