Nach der Legende soll St. Michael, der Erzengel, im Jahr 708 dem St. Aubert, dem Bischof von dem nahegelegenen Avranches, erschienen sein. Der Erzengel gab den Befehl, eine Kirche auf der felsigen Insel zu bauen. Aubert ignorierte jedoch den Engel, bis St. Michael mit seinem Finger ein Loch in den Schädel des Bischofs brannte. Man kann den Schädel mit einem Loch noch heute in Avranches sehen.
