Metz ist eine an der Mosel gelegene Stadt mit 118.489 Einwohnern Messines [mɛsiːn]; Stand 1. Januar 2019) im Nordosten Frankreichs. Sie ist die Hauptstadt des Départements Moselle und war zuvor Hauptort der früheren Region Lothringen, die seit 2016 in der Region Grand Est aufgegangen ist.Metz war ein Zentrum des merowingischen und des fränkischen Reichs und der Herkunftsort der Karolinger. Zwischen 1180 und 1210 wurde es Reichsstadt. 1552 besetzte der französische König Heinrich II. die freie Reichsstadt, welche im Westfälischen Frieden 1648 auch de jure an Frankreich fiel.
