Semur-en-Auxois hat einen mittelalterlichen Kern, der auf einer rosa Granitklippe erbaut wurde, die mehr als halb von dem Fluss Armançon umschlossen ist. Der Fluss lieferte einst Antriebskraft für die Gerbereien und Fabriken, aber sein Durchfluss ist jetzt etwas durch die Lac-Brücke, einen im 19. Jahrhundert gebauten Damm, der Wasser für den Burgundkanal liefern sollte, reduziert.
