Semur-en-Auxois heeft een middeleeuwse kern. De stad is gebouwd op een roze granietblok, omcirkeld door de rivier de Armançon. De rivier werd sterk gebruikt door leerlooierijen en dreef vele molens aan. Nu is de stroom veel verminderd door een dam die het Lac de Pont vormt. Deze werd gebouwd in de 19e eeuw om het Canal de Bourgogne van water te voorzien.
