Die Stadt ist Sitz der Unterpräfektur des Arrondissements Nontron und Hauptort des Kantons Périgord Vert Nontronnais . Zuständiger Gemeindeverband ist die Communauté de communes du Périgord Nontronnais. Die Einwohner werden Nontronnais bzw. Nontronnaises genannt.
