Von 1575 bis 1622 war Aigues-Mortes einer der acht sicheren Häfen, die den Protestanten gewährt wurden. Die Widerrufung des Edikts von Nantes im Jahr 1685 führte zu einer schweren Verfolgung des Protestantismus, die in Languedoc und den Cévennen zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts durch den "Camisard-Krieg" gekennzeichnet war. Wie andere Türme in der Stadt wurde der Konstanzturm ab 1686 als Gefängnis für die Hugenotten genutzt, die sich weigerten, zum römischen Katholizismus zu konvertieren. Im Jahr 1703 gelang es Abraham Mazel, dem Anführer der Camisards, mit sechzehn Gefährten zu entkommen.
