Der Garten hatte unregelmäßige Rückseiten von Häusern, die auf die umliegenden Straßen blickten. Die meisten dieser Häuser waren Geschäfte. In einem dieser Geschäfte kaufte Charlotte Corday das Messer, mit dem sie Jean-Paul Marat erstach, ein wichtiges Ereignis in der Französischen Revolution. Es wurde auch durch Gemälde von David und Paul-Jacques-Aimé Baudry berühmt.
Während der französischen Revolutionäre-Periode wurden die Gärten des Palais-Royal für alle Pariser geöffnet. Daher wurde das Palais Palais de l'Égalité genannt.
