Der Tour de Constance ist das Emblem der königlichen Vergangenheit von Aigues-Mortes. Aigues-Mortes hatte ebenfalls seinen Anteil an den Religionskriegen. Im Jahr 1705 wurde der "Tour de Constance" zu einem Gefängnis für Protestanten. Abraham Mazel gelang es, aus dem Turm zu entkommen, aber Marie Durand blieb 38 Jahre lang gefangen, bis sie 1768 starb. Sie wurde zu einem Symbol für Heldentum und Mut.
