The Tour de Constance is the emblem of the royal past of Aigues-Mortes. Aigues-Mortes had also its part of religious wars. In 1705, the "Tour de Constance" became a prison for Protestants. Abraham Mazel succeeded in escaping from the tower but Marie Durand stayed imprisoned for 38 years till she died in 1768. She became a symbol of heroism and courage.
