Der Fluss Somme entspringt in dem kleinen Dorf Fonsomme, 15 km von Saint-Quentin entfernt. Der Ort ist für Wanderer angenehm gestaltet und bietet einen schönen Picknickplatz
Sein Tal, das durch eine 145 km lange Strecke ausgehöhlt wurde, bildet ein komplexes Gebilde aus Wasserläufen, Sümpfen, Teichen und Kanälen. Die Somme mündet bei Saint-Valery-sur-Somme in den Ärmelkanal
Am Fuße der Quellen befand sich die Abtei von Fervaques vom lateinischen "Ferventes aquae", den sprudelnden Wassern. Nach der Zerstörung der Abtei ließen sich die Schwestern Bernardine in Saint-Quentin an der Stelle des heutigen Palais de Fervaques nieder, dessen Name erhalten blieb.
