El río Somme nace en el pequeño pueblo de Fonsomme, a 15 km de Saint-Quentin. El sitio está muy bien diseñado para los caminantes, y ofrece un agradable lugar de picnic
Su valle, esculpido por un recorrido de 145 km, forma un complejo conjunto de cursos de agua, pantanos, estanques y canales. El Somme desemboca en el Canal en Saint-Valery-sur-Somme
Al pie de los manantiales se encontraba la abadía de Fervaques, del latín "Ferventes aquae", las aguas que brotan. Tras la destrucción de la abadía, las hermanas bernardinas se instalaron en Saint-Quentin, en el emplazamiento del actual Palacio de Fervaques, que conservó su nombre.
