De Somme ontspringt in het dorpje Fonsomme, op 15 km van Saint-Quentin. Het terrein is mooi aangelegd voor wandelaars en biedt een aangename picknickplaats
De vallei, uitgesneden door een 145 km lange loop, vormt een complex geheel van waterwegen, moerassen, vijvers en kanalen. De Somme mondt uit in het Kanaal bij Saint-Valery-sur-Somme
Aan de voet van de bronnen stond de abdij van Fervaques, van het Latijnse "Ferventes aquae", de stromende wateren. Na de verwoesting van de abdij vestigden de zusters Bernardinessen zich in Saint-Quentin, op de plaats van het huidige Palais de Fervaques, dat zijn naam heeft behouden.
