Die bekannteste Legende von Montargis ist die von dem "Hund von Montargis." In der Geschichte wurde Aubry de Montdidier, ein Höfling von König Karl V. von Frankreich, um 1400 in einem Wald in der Nähe von Montargis von Richard Macaire, einem eifersüchtigen Ritter, ermordet. Nach seinem Tod zeigte der Hund von Montdidier eine bemerkenswerte Feindseligkeit gegenüber Macaire. König Karl kündigte einen Duell zwischen dem Hund und Macaire an, der lediglich mit einem Knüppel bewaffnet war. Nachdem der Hund den Kampf gewonnen hatte, gestand Macaire das Verbrechen und wurde gehängt. Ein dramatisches Bild dieses Kampfes ist an der Vorderseite des Girodet-Museums im Zentrum von Montargis zu sehen.
