Den mest kendte legende om Montargis er den om "Hunden fra Montargis." I historien blev Aubry de Montdidier, en hoffolk ved kong Charles V af Frankrig, omkring 1400 myrdet i en skov nær Montargis af Richard Macaire, en jaloux ridder. Efter hans død viste hunden fra Mondidier en bemærkelsesværdig fjendtlighed over for Macaire. Kong Charles annoncerede en duel mellem hunden og Macaire, som kun var bevæbnet med en klub. Efter at hunden havde vundet kampen, tilstod Macaire forbrydelsen, og han blev hængt. Et dramatisk billede af denne kamp kan ses på forsiden af Girodet Museum i centrum af Montargis.
