De bekendste legende van Montargis is dat van de "Hond van Montargis." In het verhaal werd Aubry de Montdidier, een hoveling van koning Karel V van Frankrijk, rond 1400 vermoord in een bos in de buurt van Montargis door Richard Macaire, een jaloerse ridder. Na zijn dood toonde de hond van Mondidier een opmerkelijke vijandigheid tegenover Macaire. King Charles kondigde een duel aan tussen de hond en Macaire die enkel gewapend was met een knuppel. Nadat de hond de strijd gewonnen had bekende Macaire de misdaad en werd hij opgehangen. Een dramatisch beeld van deze strijd is te zien aan de voorkant van de Girodet Museum in het centrum van Montargis.
