Es wurde am 19. Dezember 1986 in Anwesenheit von Präsident François Mitterrand und Jean Leclant, dem permanenten Sekretär der Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, eingeweiht. Nach zwei Jahren Bauarbeiten und Erweiterungen wurde das Museum 2007 wiedereröffnet. Neben Champollions Leben und Entdeckungen erzählt das Museum auch die Geschichte des Schreibens. Die gesamte Fassade ist mit Piktogrammen bedeckt, von den ursprünglichen Ideogrammen der ganzen Welt.
