Die Garonne ist der größte Fluss im Südwesten Frankreichs. Sie entspringt in den spanischen Pyrenäen als Garona und fließt bei Bagnères-de-Luchon nach Frankreich. Über Saint-Gaudens erreicht sie Toulouse. Die Garonne, die noch unbefahrbar ist, wird zum Zwecke der Schifffahrt von hier bis Castets-en-Dorthe über den Canal Latéral à la Garonne, der parallel zum Fluss verläuft, mit Bordeaux verbunden. Über den Canal du Midi besteht eine Verbindung zum Mittelmeer.
Von Bordeaux, das einen großen Hafen hat, ist die Garonne auch für Seeschiffe befahrbar. Gleich nach Bordeaux, bei „Bec d'Ambès“, vereinigt sich die Garonne mit der Dordogne und bildet das Ästuar der Gironde. Diese fast 100 km lange und bis zu 10 km breite Trichtermündung mündet bei Royan in den Atlantischen Ozean.
