La Garonna è il fiume più grande del sud-ovest della Francia. Nasce nei Pirenei spagnoli come Garona e entra in Francia nei pressi di Bagnères-de-Luchon. Attraverso Saint-Gaudens raggiunge Tolosa. La Garonna, ancora non navigabile, viene collegata alla navigazione a partire da qui fino a Castets-en-Dorthe tramite il Canal Latéral à la Garonne che corre parallelamente al fiume fino a Bordeaux. Tramite il Canal du Midi c'è un collegamento con il Mar Mediterraneo.
Da Bordeaux, che ha un grande porto, la Garonna è anche navigabile per navi oceaniche. Poco oltre Bordeaux, al "Bec d'Ambès", la Garonna si unisce alla Dordogna per formare l'estuario della Gironda. Questo imboccatura a forma di imbuto lunga quasi 100 km e larga fino a 10 km sfocia a Royan nell'Oceano Atlantico.
