Die Belagerung von Alès folgte der katastrophalen Kapitulation der Hauptprotestantenfestung La Rochelle, während der Belagerung von La Rochelle. Der Hugenottenwiderstand hielt jedoch im Süden Frankreichs an, und Ludwig XIII. bemühte sich, ihn ebenfalls zu beseitigen. Mit Privas und Anduze war die Stadt Alès das Zentrum einer Reihe von protestantischen Festungen im Languedoc, die sich von Nîmes und Uzès im Osten bis Castres und Montauban im Westen erstreckten. Alès wurde von Antoine Hercule de Budos, Marquis des Portes, als strategisches Ziel ausgewählt, um die Hugenottenverteidigung zu zerschlagen und ihre Hauptzentren Nîmes und Montauban zu trennen.

Nach einer intensiven Belagerung ergab sich die Stadt am 17. Juni. Am Ende der Belagerung gab Henri, Herzog von Rohan, der Anführer der Hugenottenrebellion, auf.
