Die Moyen Pont, die ursprünglich "Moyen Pont des Morts" genannt wurde, und die in ihrer Verlängerung liegende Pont des Morts verdanken ihren Namen dem Ursprung ihres Baus: Dieser wurde vom Krankenhaus Saint-Nicolas finanziert, das das beste Kleidungsstück jedes Toten in Metz einsammelte und verkaufte.
Die Mittlere Brücke war befestigt und man kann bei einem Spaziergang entlang der Mosel noch die Öffnung sehen, durch die die Gitter heruntergelassen wurden, um den Zugang zur Stadt über den Fluss zu blockieren.
