El Puente del Medio, originalmente conocido como "Puente del Medio de los Muertos", y el Puente de los Muertos situado en su prolongación, deben su nombre al origen de su construcción: fue financiado por el Hospital de Saint-Nicolas, que recuperaba y vendía las mejores prendas de cada muerto en Metz.
El Puente del Medio estaba fortificado, y todavía se puede ver, al pasear por el Mosela, la abertura que permitía bajar las puertas para bloquear el acceso a la ciudad desde el río.
