De Middenbrug, oorspronkelijk bekend als de "Middenbrug van de Doden", en de Brug van de Doden in het verlengde daarvan, danken hun naam aan de oorsprong van hun bouw: deze werd gefinancierd door het Sint-Nicolaasziekenhuis, dat de beste kleding van elke dode in Metz recupereerde en verkocht.
De Middenbrug was versterkt, en als je langs de Moezel loopt, kun je nog steeds de opening zien waarmee de poorten konden worden neergelaten om de toegang tot de stad vanaf de rivier te blokkeren.
