Die Galerien des Palais-Royal in Paris, das zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts erbaut wurde, wurden als etwas völlig Neues angesehen: ein öffentlicher Raum, der vor den Elementen geschützt ist und ideal für einen ruhigen Spaziergang.
Charles Fourier ließ sich hiervon inspirieren, um seine eigene "Galeriestraße" als Hauptstraße seines geplanten Phalanstère zu entwerfen. Im Winter beheizt und im Sommer belüftet, wäre es leicht und bequem gewesen, dorthin zu gelangen.
Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde die Fourieristische "Galeriestraße" in sozialen Wohnbauprojekten wie dem erschwinglichen Wohnbauprojekt von Henry Robert in London und der Cité Napoléon von Alexandre Veugny in Paris verwendet.
